Iva:Robinson Crusoe

Lazarova,Iva

Title:Robinson Crusoe
Author: Daniel Defoe
Copyright Date: 25 April 1719
Genre: Novel
Number of pages: 375

The novel centres around the incredible journey of Robinson Crusoe.Actually the family Crusoe corrupted from the German name of the family-Kreutznaer,which was too long and difficult to pronounce. So,Crusoe sets sail from the Queen's Dock in Hell on a sea voyage in September 1651.This is against his parents' wishes, who want him to stay home and pursue a career in law. After this journey in which his ship wrecked by a vicious storm ,his enthusiasm for the sea remains so strong that in a year he sets out to sea again. This journey ends in a disaster,too-the ship is taken over by Sale pirates and Crusoe slaves them for two years. But with his friends Xury, they manage to escape in a bout, which they made.Later,Crusoe is rescued by a Portuguese ship's Captain ship off the western coast of Africa,en route to Brazil. There Crusoe becomes owner of a plantation.
In his next journey everything goes wrong. His ship is wrecked again in a storm about fourty miles out to sea on the Island of Despair,as he calls it.There he learnds how to gather food, hunt animals and built his own living.
A few years pass, when Crusoe find out that cannibals come to to his island to eat slaves.Although he is scared of them,Robinson saves one of the cannibals, who has to be eaten. He teaches him how to talk and gives him the name "Friday",after the day he appeared. On the next visit of the cannibals,Robinson and Friday save one Spainard and Friday's old father. The Spainard then informs Crusoe that there are other Spainards shipwrecked on the mainland.A plan is made- wherein the Spainard returns with Friday's father to the mainland and bring the others, build a ship and sail to a Spanish port.
Before the Spainards return,an English ship appears, but mustineers have taken control over it.Crusoe and the ship's captain make a deal,in which he helps the captain and crew to take back their ship from the mutineers and leave the worst of them on the island. Before they leave for England,Robinson shows the mutineers how he lived on the island. He arrives in England in June 11,1987 and learns that his family believed him dead and there's no inheritance for him from his father. He then departs to London to reclaim the profits of his estate in Brazil, which has made him an amount of wealth. He takes his wealth to England and Friday with him and on the way back they experience their last adventure together-fighting off the werewolves, while passing the Pyrenees.
Although many people consider the book as great, amazing etc. I found it a little boring.I agree that Robinson Crusoe expereinces many new things as living alone on an island, being alone, hunting for food and being friend with a cannibal, but I expected more adventures when I started reading. However,I recommend it for those who like that kind of novels or are interested in reading books for adventures or disasters.
