There are two main characters in the book around which the story revolves - Paul Sheldon and Annie Wilkies. Paul is a successful writer. His most famous works are the"Misery"'-novels, which tell about a woman going by the same name as the book's title. He is cool, calm and collected. Annie Wilkies is a psychotic murderer. She is also obssesed with Paul's novels.
One day just after finishing his latest novel ''Fast cars'' Paul desides to go outside for a ride, but while he is in the car a storm breaks out and he gets in a n accident. He is saved by Annie. She is a big fan of his books and she gets him in her house where she helps him get better, but unfortunately paul's latest book comes out and in it he kills Miset, who is the main character of his best-selling novels. Annie gets angry, makes him burn the manuscript of fast cast cars and then write another manuscript in which he brings Misery back to life. The story continues as Paul writes "Misery's return" and finds out more about Annie. It turns out that she had killed babies and old people, but never left enough proof to be convicted. In the end Paul manages to kill Annie and escape for her terror. Misery's return becomes his best book yet, but he still has bad dreams about annie and her terror over him. The book ends with Paul seeing a boy that drives a skunk in a cart. From it he gets inspiration for a new book and begins writing.
