The main characters in the book are Katrina, her grandmother, Malcolm, Elizabeth, Vincent, Heidi and Mr.Darling. Katrina is a 16 year-old girl that has lost her parents in a car accident and her only family now seems to be her grandmother Anna. She works in the family coffeehouse every day and that way supports herself and Anna. Elizabeth is one of the two best friends Katrina has and is described as a very good artist and a very creative person. Vincent is Katrina`s second best friend who has always been by her side; he is a very good swimmer and has excellent grades in order to get a scholarship to go to college. Mr.Darling holds a coffeehouse right next to Anna`s. He sells organic coffee and because of that he is running a very successful business. Heidi is Mr.Darling`s daughter and is the over-achiever of the school where Katrina and her best friends go. Malcolm is a handsome guardian angel on a break between missions.

The setting is in a small town called Nordby located in the state of Washington. This place is described as cloudy and cold; therefore, people are surprised to see the sun even in the summer. Nordby`s climat is mostly rainy because there is a harbour at one of its sides. Everything is happening nowadays.

One morning Katrina is taking out the trash when she sees a homeless guy sleeping in the alley by her grandmother`s coffeehouse. She feels sorry for him, so she leaves him a cup of coffee, a pastry, and a packet of chocolate-covered coffee beans. Impressed by her good deed the homeless guy, which turns out to be a real angel delivering messages, finds her later that day and tells her that because of her kindness and unselfish nature he could reward her by completing her biggest desire. Katrina wants to get rid of him, so she quickly tells him she wants fortune. Malcolm explains her who he is, gives her one of the coffee beans, and tells her that when she eats it she`ll get fortune. Katrina is too busy working at the coffeehouse because their business is being ruined by Mr.Darling, and she gives the bean to her best friend Vincent. After he eats it, he gets a scholarship and becomes really famous as a local hero because of saving the life of a successful businessman. He starts dating Heidi whose father names a coffee after his daughter`s boyfriend. Malcolm figured out that Katrina hasn`t eaten the bean, so he gives her another one which he said will bring her fame. She drops the bean, which she was thinking of giving to Elizabeth, by mistake, and unfortunately her cat eats it and gets really famous for catching world`s biggest rat. The coffeehouse is being closed by the health inspector for a while and the same night Anna gets a little heart attack. Scared but not hopeless, Katrina starts making plans about saving the family business, which turns out to be not so difficult because of the help of her good friends and Malcolm. When the annual Solstice Festival comes Katrina saves the coffeehouse by making a lot of money, and finally goes out with Malcolm whose break ends exactly on that night. Realising that she is in love with him, she takes the last bean and wishes Malcolm to get the promotion that he talked about. Then he disappears for a while, but after a few months he comes back telling Katrina that her wish has been completed and he got the promotion, which was becoming a mortal human in order to have normal life.
