There are several main characters in the book, but the most important of the most important are Tiffany Aching, an eleven years old girl, who wants to be a witch, the Nac Mac Feegles, a kind of a blue fairy, that does nothing but to fight, fight eachother, and drink things that would do serious harm to people, Miss Level, the witch-teacher of Tiffany, that is some kind of a reversed twin, meaning that she has two bodies and only one mind for both of them, a hiver, a misterious creature that takes over people's minds and makes them go crazy and dead, and, later on, Granny Weatherax, the most powerful and important witch on the Discworld. Other more often mentioned characters are the people of the village nearby meiss Level's house, and the other girls of the same age as Tiffany, that also learn witchcraft, who, in the beginning, Tiffany is trying to impress with her magic skills.

In the first couple of pages, the story takes place in Tiffany's homeland, The Chalk. Then Tiffany goes to the cottage of Miss Level. In the last 75 pages, after some accidents happen to the people in the area, the witches get to the Witch Trials, something like a contest. In the end, Tiffany is back to the The Chalk.

After Tiffany goes to the place where Miss Level lives, and starts doing what she has to to be a witch, she finds out that taking care of people that do nothing for you, as well as staring at and milling flowers all day long is extremely boring. But she doesn’t know that the hiver is already after her, and because of that, she keeps doing a little half-magical trick she has made up – she leaves her own body. Soon the hiver takes over the girl and uses her body to do things that Tiffany has thought of as horrible, like stealing the money of an old man, keeping it for his funeral. Luckily, Tiffany managed to make the hiver leave her body, because of the help of the Nac Mac Feegles. Together with Miss Level, she goes to the witch trials to seek the help of more powerful witches, because they both know that the hiver is going to pursue Tiffany. On the witch trials, with the help of Granny Weatherwax, the girl understands that the hiver is taking over people’s minds because it’s seeking shelter from the world around itself, and shows the creature how to die, the ability of which the hiver envies people.
