The main charecters of the story is a boy named Greg, who has just entered middel school, Rodrik, his older brother, Many, his little brother, the father and mother and his best friend Rowley.

The setting takes place in a middle school where Greg now sturdies. It looks like an ordenary American school - filled with lockers and children everywere. The setting sometimes changes and the readers get to find out about the neighborhood.

Greg and Rowley are two boys who just enter middle school. There Greg tries to become popular among all the other kids but fails. He tries everything- joins the hall way patrool, acts in the Wizzard of Os play and tries to become a wrestler. During this adventure Rowley tries to be like his friend and keeps copying Gregs looks and ideas. On Halloween they both get chased by bulies and get traped at Gregs grandmothers house. When Christmass comes, the two boys play an unusual game - Rowley gets on a trisicle while Greg tries to hit him with a ball. During one of those games, Rowley brakes his arm and suddenly becomes very popular at school. Greg gets upset about it and borrows his friends jacket. He escorts some kindergardeners back home, but before that he hides them in a pit in order to protect himself from the three bulies he met on Halloween. The school principle finds out about that and Rowley gets punnished for Gregs back behavior. After some time the truth actualy is revealed and the two friends get mad at each other and never talk to each other. After some time, Rowley becomes popular and finds new friends while his former friend stays alone. In the end the three bulies actually find the boys. They make Rowley eat a cheese that is knowned as an old chees sitting in frot of school giving the cheese touch to everyone who touches it. The cheese touch makes everyone run away from the person and the only way to get rid of it is to touch someone else and give them that curse. To save his former friend, Greg tells the other children that he ate the cheese. They all run away exept Rowley. He stays and thanks Grag. After that moment they again become best friends and the story ends in a Happy ending !
