The theme of the book “A Love for Life” is that a person should be brave and never give up, and that’s the key to happiness. Fanella, an editor in a publishing company, manages to surmount all challenges in her life by facing the problems and not ignoring them. For example, when she’s told that she can’t have children of her own, she starts planning other ways in which to have a child. Another example is when Fanella decides to adopt a child, and her boyfriend leaves her, she continues to fight tooth and nail in spite of the situation. At the end of the story, Fanella receives a family of her own because of her dedication and bravery. For example, she manages to adopt a child and even have a biological one. Another example is that Fanella finds a new boyfriend who truly loves her.

The main characters are Fanella, Steven, Ellie, Teresa and Rod. Fanella is an editor in a publishing company. The doctors tell her that she’s incapable of having her own children; therefore, she decides to adopt a child. At first, her boyfriend, Steven, supports her decision but in the end leaves Fanella alone to cope with the adoption process. Ellie is the child who Fanella agrees to adopt. Teresa is Fanella’s best friend who always supports her. Rod is Ellie’s teacher and the person who Fanella falls in love with.

The setting of the story is Cambridge in the twentieth century. Fanella lives in a small apartment in Cambridge while her best friend, Teresa, lives in a big house with her husband, Paulo, and son, Timothy. Rod is married to a rich and beautiful woman, Leah, who is an interior designer, and, therefore, both live in a big and elegant house in the countryside.

The plot of the story is complicated and full of surprises. Doctors tell Fanella that she can’t have children of her own; therefore, both she and her boyfriend, Steven, decide to adopt a child. However, Steven falls in love with a younger woman and leaves Fanella alone to cope with the adoption process. At first, Fanella is desperate because she doesn’t know whether the social services would let her adopt a child while single. Nevertheless, it turns out possible to adopt a child without being in a relationship. Fanella is very happy and continues the difficult process. After the summer, Rod, Timothy’s teacher, asks Teresa whether she knows someone who could explain the publishing process of children’s books to all the students in his class. Teresa immediately thinks of Fanella and tells him about her. When Teresa’s friend understands about that, she agrees to the proposal. After her visit at Timothy’s school, Rod and Fanella go to a restaurant in order to discuss Rod’s desire to publish a children’s book of his own. After she gets to know Timothy’s teacher, she falls in love with him. However, Rod is married to Leah, a beautiful woman who doesn’t want to have children. Fanella decides to concentrate on the adoption, her main priority. At the end of that difficult process, Fanella finally meets Ellie, the child who she wants to adopt. Both like each other, and, therefore, Ellie starts to live with her new mother. Ellie has a good heart although she’s sometimes moody. After the adoption, Teresa arranges a meeting between Fanella and Mark, Teresa’s husband’s colleague. Both like each other and start dating. Nevertheless, Ellie is against the relationship and tries to ruin it. After the Easter holidays, Ellie has to start going to school. She visits Timothy’s class because of Rod who is a very good teacher. However, Rod gets accused of hitting Dan, one of Rod’s students, who always causes problems. Rod is suspended but soon afterwards proved innocent in a disciplinary hearing. He has problems at home. His wife betrays him for another man, Mr. Simpson, one of her clients. In order to relax a little, Rod concentrates on the children’s book he’s writing. He starts having business meetings with Fanella but falls in love with her. She has the same feelings for him and, therefore, ends her relationship with Mark. Leah tries to get her husband back, but it’s too late. Ellie approves Rod’s and Fanella’s relationship. In the end the three of them become a family, and Fanella understands that she is pregnant. It looks like the doctors have made a mistake, and Steven is the one who can’t have children. Fanella finally reaches the happiness that she deserves.
